The stereotype that English food is bland and that English football is brutish is proved false by this BBC Bangers & Mash dish and the 2018 English World Cup team. This onion gravy will have your shouting along to "God Saves the Queen" on the touchline.

Preheat oven to 400°F200°C. Place the sausages in a cast iron pan, or a deep baking dish, in the over for 15 minutes. Turning after the first ten.

While the sausages are baking, mix the thyme, rosemary and mustard into the beef stock.

Remove the pan from the oven and add the onions and stock mixture. Season with salt & pepper and return to over for 20 minutes.

Bring a pan of water to a boil. Clean, peel and cut the potatoes into quarters. Add to the water and cook until tender, about 15 minutes.

When cooked, drain the potatoes. Add 4 tbsp57g of butter and the milk to the potatoes, and mash together. Set aside.

Take the pan from the oven, remove the sausages and seat aside. Add the rest of the butter and the flour to the gravy, mix well and continue cooking until gravy thickens.

Serve the sausages and onion gravy over the mash, with peas on the side.
